What is it:
The Horiba ABX Minotrol 16 (REF 5300100303 for 3 × 2.5 mL; REF 5300100312 for 12 × 2.5 mL) is a tri-level whole blood hematology control for verifying the accuracy and precision of HORIBA ABX Micros series hematology analyzers. The "16" refers to the 16 hematology parameters the control verifies, and "tri-level" means it includes three concentration levels — Low, Normal, and High — that confirm analyzer performance across the full clinical range. It's manufactured in the USA for HORIBA Medical and is for professional in vitro diagnostic use.
What it's used for:
Hematology controls are how labs prove their blood-cell counters are still measuring patient samples accurately. Minotrol 16 contains mammalian leucocytes (WBC), erythrocytes (RBC), and thrombocytes (PLT) suspended in a plasma-like fluid — formulated to mimic real whole blood. Running it through your ABX Micros analyzer at all three levels (Low, Normal, High) verifies the instrument is reporting accurate Complete Blood Count (CBC) values across the clinical range. It's a required part of routine QC for any lab running CBC testing on the ABX Micros series.
What's included:

FAQs:
What does the Horiba ABX Minotrol 16 control verify?
It's a multi-parameter whole blood control that verifies the accuracy and precision of CBC (Complete Blood Count) results on HORIBA ABX Micros hematology analyzers. It checks 16 hematology parameters — including WBC, RBC, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, PLT, MPV, and the WBC differential — at three concentration levels (Low, Normal, High).
Which analyzers is Minotrol 16 compatible with?
It's validated for the ABX Micros 60, ABX Micros ES 60, and ABX Micros ESV 60 hematology analyzers using HORIBA ABX reagents. It's not designed for use with HORIBA's Pentra-family hematology analyzers (Pentra 60 C+, Pentra XL 80, Pentra DX Nexus) or with non-HORIBA analyzers — those require different control products.
What does "tri-level" mean?
Tri-level means the kit includes three concentration levels — Low, Normal, and High — that verify analyzer performance across the full clinical range. Running all three levels confirms the analyzer is accurate at the low end (where anemic or thrombocytopenic patient samples land), the middle (normal healthy values), and the high end (elevated counts seen in clinical cases).
What does the "16" in Minotrol 16 mean?
The "16" refers to the number of hematology parameters the control verifies — 16 measured and calculated values including WBC, RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, MPV, and the white blood cell differential parameters.
What's the difference between the 3-pack and the 12-pack?
Same product, different kit sizes. The 3 × 2.5 mL kit contains one vial each of Low, Normal, and High level — enough for a single QC run across all three levels. The 12 × 2.5 mL kit contains 4 vials of each level — designed for ongoing QC over a longer period or for higher-volume labs. Choose based on your lab's testing volume and how often you run QC.
Does this product need refrigeration?
Yes. Store at 2–8°C and do not freeze — freezing destroys the cellular components and makes the control unusable.
How long is a kit good for once opened?
Open-vial stability varies by analyzer and storage conditions — refer to the package insert for your specific lot. In general, hematology controls have a shorter open-vial stability than closed-vial shelf life, so most labs only open as many vials as they'll use within the manufacturer-specified window.
Is this the same as Minocal or Minotrol CRP?
No. HORIBA's hematology control product line includes several related but distinct products. Minotrol 16 is the standard tri-level control for ABX Micros analyzers. Minocal is HORIBA's calibration product (used to calibrate the analyzer, not verify it). Minotrol CRP is a specialized control for ABX Micros CRP / CRP 200 analyzers running C-reactive protein testing. Make sure you're ordering the right one for your instrument and use case.
